Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy corrects disorders of the dental pulp -- the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. Root canal therapy is a special dental procedure that saves a tooth from pulpal nerve damage, which in turn can lead to complete tooth lose.   If left untreated, the tooth could get infected and need to be removed.  With root canal therapy, Dr. Gilbertson removes the pulp and then cleans and seals off the root canal.  Then, he places a finishing crown on top of the tooth to strengthen it.  The procedure is relatively simple and pain free and Dr. Gilbertson is known for his gentle touch when performing this procedure.

Often patients come to us with a few questions or concerns:

• Residual tooth pain – Tooth pain after a root canal is not uncommon, however, the tooth pain is from the ligaments holding the tooth and not from the nerve inside the tooth.  After the root canal procedure, some healing must occur and there may be some discomfort associated with this healing.  If the pain persists, please contact Dr. Gilbertson for a consultation and exam. 
• Concerned with the lasting effects of root canal therapy - with proper care and cleaning a root canal should last a lifetime.  If there is a broken tooth, gum disease or other problems the tooth may become infected, the tooth may need to be removed.  If any questions or issues arise from a root canal, please notify our office for an evaluation exam.
