In Office Periodontal Services for Scottsdale and Phoenix area

Periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) is an infection of the gums and bone.  It is typically painless and patients are usually unaware that there is a problem.  If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss.  Periodontal disease is also linked to medical conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease, and pre-term childbirth.  It is important to get regular checkups with your dentist and dental hygienist so that if a problem is detected it can be treated at an early stage with a simple procedure called “scaling and root planning”.

During your checkup, the dental hygienist will use an instrument called a periodontal probe to measure the natural space between the tooth and gum which is also called a “pocket”.  Healthy pockets measure 3 millimeters or less.  Deeper pockets indicate a presence of periodontal disease and will usually require scaling and root planning because the plaque bacteria located in the deeper pockets is not easily removed by the patient with brushing and flossing.

If scaling and root planning are recommended, the patient will usually be seen in a series of visits.  A local anesthetic will be used for patient comfort.  Instruments are used to remove the plaque and tartar down to the bottom of each periodontal pocket, making sure that the root surfaces are smooth.  This smooth surface allows the tissue to heal and the pocket to shrink.  Medication may also be placed into the pockets to facilitate optimal results.

Good oral hygiene habits are also an integral part of healing.  A typical routine will consist of brushing in the morning and night, as well as flossing nightly.  Your hygienist may recommend additional items to assist you in plaque removal.

Your follow-up appointment will include a re-evaluation of the periodontal pockets.  If pocketing remains, additional treatment may be necessary, or you may be referred to a periodontist.  Continued good hygiene and regular dental visits are required to prevent the periodontal disease from recurring or getting worse.
